Grades 4-6 In addition to describing many ways in which animals keep Earth's ecosystem in balance, the Team Earth series (6 titles) helps readers understand how people have disrupted the environment and how they can protect it. The visually appealing format includes wide-spaced lines of text, sidebars with related facts, and close-up photos of animals in action. Besides the colorful photos, each volume presents one or two digital diagrams, graphs, and/or maps. The occasional, full-page Straight to the Source features quote a section from, for example, a Scientific American article or a government report, then recommend that the student write about it in a certain way. Many kids will find these passages challenging to read, much less to analyze and discuss. Like the books' concluding Stop and Think sections, they can be off-putting, in contrast to the books' accessible, engaging main texts. Ecosystem Architects looks at the importance of animal structures such as nests, dams, and coral reefs to the environment. An attractive series with well-chosen topics.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2020, American Library Association.)
